Laser dentistry is a different method of ameliorating dental issues that is rapidly gaining popularity among dental practitioners. Laser treatment takes advantage of new advances in laser technology to produce more expedient treatment techniques that have much less risk than traditional treatments. Today we will discuss some of the benefits of laser dentistry over standard dental treatments. We will also explore a number of the main reasons why dentists who use lasers remain challenging to locate despite the large amount of scientific support for the superiority and lack of risk involved with laser dental treatment.

Even though the practice of medicine in general has been advancing so rapidly, ordinary dental treatments remain fairly barbaric. For example, a regular old filling is actually performed by boring into the tooth enamel with a tiny drill bit. There is a great deal of threat that your tooth will crack open in this very common treatment, in which case the tooth would eventually be lost.

When a hole has been drilled into your tooth, a piece of metal amalgam or ceramic is placed into the gap in your tooth enamel, with a high probability that the piece of amalgam will wear out and need to be replaced in just a few short years. When this time has arrived, there will usually be a need for even more damage to the outer layer of the tooth. After the hole becomes large enough, a root canal will become a necessity. This consists of the whole middle section of the tooth being drilled through, destroying the vital neural tissue that lies within.

Dental laser treatment alters this dynamic a great deal. A dentist making use of laser technology to fill a cavity will likely not need to use any anesthetic. There are no mechanical parts inside the laser dental equipment and also no fear of overheating or of causing a fissure in the enamel. The laser itself kills the bacteria that cause the cavity in the first place, meaning there is a substantially reduced chance of ill effects from the procedure. What's more, much less of the healthy tooth enamel is sacrificed in the procedure, and the filling that is provided will often be much more resilient.

We have considered the basic cavity filling as an example, but laser dental technique extends far beyond this type of common procedure. Dental laser equipment also make possible dental surgery that is unusually clean and precise. Operations performed with these techniques often require no stitches or sutures, produce very little bleeding, and present a substantially reduced danger of becoming infected because the laser that is used actually kills the bacteria that are present in the area where the surgery is being performed. For this reason, oral surgery that is performed with laser technology usually heals significantly more quickly and significantly more cleanly than the usual oral surgery modalities.

The only reason that it is presently quite challenging to find a laser dentistry practice is due to the newness of the field itself. The equipment is still very expensive, and there are yet relatively few dentists who possess proficiency in using it. Due to the impressively increased efficacy and safety of these laser dentistry techniques, it is practically guaranteed that they will become more widely used over the coming years, as a new crop of dentists receive training in how to use them.

Hmm, just like other fields of medicine, dentistry has gone a long way since it started. This laser dentistry is a new innovation in the evolving world of dentistry but the lack of quality practitioners will make a patient think twice in taking it. In the near future, there's a good chance for this to be be the trend. But for now, it's good to stick to what we've been using traditionally. It's always better to be safe. Laser treatment's era will come. :)
